How to Check Your Roof for Damage After a Severe Thunderstorm
Posted on July 20, 2021 by Phillip Camerer
Here in the Joplin area and four states region, we see our fair share of severe thunderstorms. And we’re in tornado alley, too. That means a lot of Joplin homes receive roof damage each year. But while you may easily spot extreme roof damage, such as when a portion of your roof is stripped bare, some damage is a little harder to detect. This guide should help you to ascertain the condition of your roof after severe weather.
Types of Storm Damage to Your Roof
Wind
High winds, such as those produced by tornados or severe thunderstorms, often damage roofs, particularly shingled roofs. While extremely high winds often rip away shingles entirely, clearly exposing the underlayment, less intends high winds tend to lift and curl shingles. It’s important to watch for the less visible curled shingles because shingles are designed to overlap for waterproofing. When shingles are curled up by the wind, it compromises the waterproofing of your home’s roof.
Hail
Hail can damage your roof from impact. As hailstones smash into your roof and leave ugly pockmarks, they often dislodge the granules on your shingles. These granules are important because they protect your roof from sun and rain damage. Extreme hail can even rip shingles.
Standing Water
Roofs that are warped can have pools of standing water accumulate after a storm. Even a roof that is not warped can experience pooling water if the gutters are clogged. It is essential for the safety of your home that you remedy standing water issues before water can penetrate beneath your shingles and cause rot and structural damage.
Debris
Last but not least, debris, such as sheet metal and tree limbs, can cut, puncture, or obstruct the dispersal of water from your roof. Some types of debris, like heavier tree limbs, can damage the wood underneath your shingles from mere force of impact. If a storm deposits debris on your roof, you should scrutinize your roof, paying attention to personal safety as you do.
Remember to Contact Your Insurance Company
It is essential that you accurately document storm damage to your home and roof for your insurance company. You will also want to contact them quickly. This will help ensure that your insurance pays you the maximum amount to cover the damage to your home. You don’t want to be left with the bill for repairs to your home after a severe storm.
