5 Signs It’s Time To Replace Your Roof
Posted on July 5, 2021 by Phillip Camerer
Have you been begun to suspect that your roof is ready to be re-shingled? Many homeowners have felt the same way, and it’s not unusual for there to be confusion about how to tell if a roof is in good condition. Below we’ll explain some tell-tale signs that it’s time for new shingles.
1. Sagging Roof
Watch out for roof sagging. If the roof on your home appears rippled, it could be a sign that your roof has leaked and water damage is warping the plywood beneath your shingles. Sometimes this can mean repairing a small area of your roof, and sometimes it might mean re-roofing the whole house. Either way, it is essential that you have a professional inspect your roof to prevent further property damage.
2. Light Visible in Attic
An effective way to find cracks in your roof is to enter your attic space during daylight and look for light coming through your roof. It is important to make sure that it is sufficiently dark in your attic that you can detect the small pinpoints of light coming through your roof. Generally speaking, if you can see light, water can leak through your roof. You should contact a roofing expert immediately.
3. Roof Moss and Algae
Is your house in a shaded area, or does it have trees around it? You may have trouble with algae and moss growing on your shingles. In the last 15-20 years, many shingles have utilized treatments that prevent the growth of moss and algae. However, if your roof is older than that or covered with lower-quality shingles, it may be susceptible to destructive algae and moss. The moss and algae can accelerate the rate at which your roof rots. Sometimes this can be remedied with some cleaning and treatment, but at other times a portion or all of your roof may need to be replaced.
4. Leaking Roof
The classic sign that your roof has reached the end of its lifespan is visible leakage. If you see drops of water come through your sealing on a rainy day, it’s time to talk to a roofer. Other signs of leakage include yellowing or browning of areas of your ceiling. At Philip Camerer Roofing, we’re happy to help you understand the condition of your roof and replace it if necessary.
5. Your Roof is 25 Years or Older
Generally, shingles have a lifespan of 25-30 years. If your roof is coming up on 25 years, you should plan for its replacement. And if your roof is 30 years or older, replacing your roof should be a top priority.
